From Luxury to Budget: Ranking Osnabrück’s Most Popular Hotels

Sebastian08/12/202526/05/2025

Arriving in Osnabrück always carries with it a certain charm. The blend of Gothic architecture, cobblestone alleyways, medieval towers, and leafy promenades presents a city that hasn’t forgotten its past. While it may not scream “tourist hotspot” in the same way Berlin or Munich does, Osnabrück quietly whispers history and hospitality into the ears of travelers willing to listen. Choosing the right hotel in a city like this isn’t just a matter of convenience—it’s part of the experience.

For this visit, I decided to explore the city’s hotel landscape more deeply than ever before. My goal was to immerse myself not only in the city’s streets and cafés but also in the beds, breakfast buffets, check-in counters, and concierge desks of its most talked-about hotels.

1. Luxury Among Red Brick and Gothic Spires: Romantik Hotel Walhalla

Hotel Name: Romantik Hotel Walhalla
Address: Bierstraße 24, 49074 Osnabrück, Germany
Booking Platform: Booked through Booking.com
Room Type: Deluxe Double Room
Price: €189 per night, breakfast included

Nestled in the heart of Osnabrück’s Old Town, directly adjacent to the historic Town Hall, Romantik Hotel Walhalla stands with quiet confidence. There’s a sense that the building knows it’s older than the street it sits on—perhaps even older than the stories passed down through generations of Osnabrückers. It dates back to 1690 and has been carefully preserved and elegantly updated to meet modern expectations without losing the essence of its past.

The entrance is subtle. No towering signage or blaring lights. Just a warm, ivy-clad façade and wooden doors that creak slightly when opened—like they’re whispering secrets from centuries ago. The reception area is a fusion of timber-beamed ceilings, polished wood flooring, and tastefully antique furniture. The check-in process was smooth, with staff who were both precise and personable. My reservation was confirmed within moments, and I was offered a glass of chilled Riesling from the region—a welcoming touch that immediately set the tone.

The room, a Deluxe Double, was located on the second floor, accessible by a wooden staircase that groaned with character. Stepping inside, I was met with a well-balanced marriage of contemporary comfort and rustic charm. Exposed wooden beams crossed overhead, and the windows overlooked the winding lanes below. The bed was king-sized with crisp linen, feather-soft pillows, and a heavy duvet suited for North German nights. A freestanding antique armoire stood against the wall, juxtaposed with a modern flat-screen television.

The bathroom was sleek, with underfloor heating and a rainfall shower encased in glass. Molton Brown toiletries lined the shelf, and thick, oversized towels added to the indulgence. A Nespresso machine sat atop a walnut sideboard, accompanied by a variety of local teas and a handwritten note welcoming me by name.

Dinner was taken at the hotel’s own Restaurant Walhalla, located on the ground floor. I ordered the duck breast with red cabbage and apple purée, paired with a glass of Spätburgunder. The flavors were as intricate as the restaurant’s ambiance—dim lighting, original 17th-century wall murals, and low-slung timber beams that made you feel as though you’d wandered into a candlelit time capsule.

Breakfast the next morning was taken in the Wintergarten, a glass-covered conservatory with views of a small courtyard garden. An extensive buffet offered fresh breads from a local bakery, smoked trout, regional cheeses, fruit compotes, and eggs cooked to order. The coffee was strong, and the servers attentive without being overbearing.

The location is perhaps the hotel’s greatest strength. Everything in Osnabrück’s historic center is within walking distance. The Cathedral, Felix-Nussbaum-Haus, Heger Tor, and the weekly market are no more than a few cobbled steps away.

Romantik Hotel Walhalla doesn’t just offer accommodation—it offers placement within a living museum, comfort framed by centuries-old timber, and service as refined as the porcelain on its breakfast tables.

10. Wrapping the Journey: A City That Deserves Longer Stays

Osnabrück may not boast the skyscrapers of Frankfurt or the flashy nightlife of Hamburg, but its hotels reveal a city invested in comfort, culture, and continuity. From ivy-clad mansions offering royal-level luxury to family-run pensions that serve homemade jam with their rolls, the city offers a spectrum of lodging as varied and welcoming as its people.

And if one thing becomes clear after spending nights in these diverse accommodations, it’s this: Osnabrück doesn’t need to shout to make an impression. It just opens the door, pours a cup of hot East Frisian tea, and invites you to stay awhile.
